Starting at an early age I was exposed to the arts and crafts by two very creative parents. My mom sewed and knitted clothes, painted furniture, made carnival costumes, and much more. One of my best early childhood memories was when my father would take me to his work at the textile design studio. There I was able to paint with acrylic paints on large pieces of paper. I still fondly remember the smell of the paint in the studio. My favorite vacations as a child and teenager would take us to Florence and other European cities where I spent hours admiring and studying the artwork in museums. About 7 years ago, when I started to make my “little beings”, I found a way to combine all my passions in my art work. I get to sculpt (ceramic), paint (glaze), knit, crochet, sew, and create small scale costumes. In my sculptures I combine different parts that play with contrasting materials — ceramic and fiber, smooth and rough, hard and soft. Most of the pieces also combine different kinds of beings. I love the idea of blending human and animal forms, for example a piece with a human and a bird leg. I believe that we are all connected. I create, knit, crochet, sew, needle felt, hand build (stoneware and porcelain), and glaze all the parts. I enjoy working with clay and love glazing the ceramic pieces, and I very much enjoy the crafting aspect such as knitting and sewing. These, what are considered women's crafts, have always been a big part in my life and I am excited that I found a way to include the traditional fiber crafts into my sculptures. For fabrics I like to use repurposed antique tea towels and linens that I often dye with tea, coffee, or other plant materials. I welcome the idea of including traditional crafts and materials in what we consider fine arts. Some of the inspiration I find in the carnival culture, which has been a big part in my life growing up and later when I was living in New Orleans. Before I started working on my sculptural pieces, my focus was on painting. Because of the colors' vibrancy I mainly worked in oil paints. For many years the topic and inspiration of my paintings was rooted in the connection to my childhood place and to my roots. Painting the crown has been a healing and meditation process for me. I earned a five year degree in Graphic Design at a Swiss art school. After a career as a graphic designer I moved to the United States and studied sculpture and painting at the University of New Orleans. Later I graduated with a painting degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I have shown my work at different venues in the US and in Switzerland. Some of my sculptures can be viewed at LeMieux Gallery in New Orleans, LA and at The New Local Gallery in Boulder, CO. I am also a member of Open Studios in Boulder, CO. evamaierart@gmail.com ︎︎ ︎︎︎ 303-709-6884 https://evamaierart.com/Sculptures Sat, 15 Jul 2023 23:33:10 +0000 Eva Maier https://evamaierart.com/Sculptures “The wildness and attention to detail that underlies the creative forces of nature are also present in these fantastic mixed-media sculptural works by Eva Maier. Made manifest in these pieces is an acknowledgement that the boundaries we humans erect between ourselves and other animals, between animals and plants, between organic and inorganic beings, is much more porous and flexible than we like to believe. The beautiful thing about these sculptures - the sheer artistry of the ceramics, crochet, felt, sewing, and design work aside - is the benevolence and humor of her imagination. These creatures are not monsters nor cute anthropomorphic projections, as half-animal/half-human beings so often are. The spirit of the animal dominates with the human attributes present in gesture and mental flights of fashion. They speak to a world of, and about, transformation. It is a transformation that leans to the good and the clever rather than the stupid and negative. The physical processes involved in making these sculptures also reflects transformation of materials. Felt that is hardened and molded by repeated pricking with a barbed metal point; dull, malleable lumps of clay shaped, fired, and glazed, to a bright, hard shine; simple twine wrought into complex lace. So it follows: the artist imagines that a hoof can become a delicate booted foot, mushrooms are frills on a dress, ceramic ears with felted interiors are a jaunty cap. Why not make a place for these strange, startling combinations, are they not surprisingly lovely? Do they not make you smile? Welcome to the world and all its possibilities.” — Susan Norris-Davis, Artist/Biologist <img width="3024" height="3024" width_o="3024" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/34aa4b694a09d6664439e0de36b162f74c7fd98a8f5c1e2700b54c767bbc0925/IMG_0274-1.jpg" data-mid="185470687" border="0" alt="The Guard, SOLD → Because of the color vibrancy and the ability to layer and rework the slow drying medium, I mainly work with oil paints. For many years the content of my paintings was inspired by my childhood, birth place, and my roots. I grew up surrounded by cow pastures. Cows are beautiful beings and to me represent nurturing, motherhood, gentleness, and goodness. Similarly, in my seedpod series, I was exploring the connection to our roots, fertility, and growth. In more recent paintings I took inspiration from paper collages I made and also from my sculptures. I enjoy the symbolism of the animals and objects in each piece and the stories the paintings might inspire in the viewer. For many years painting the crown was a healing and meditative process for me. A simple yet interesting shape, and for me a reminder that we can “crown ourselves” instead of waiting for others to do that for us. For the past few years I have been taking a break from painting and have been focusing on my sculptural work. But recently, I have been looking at my empty canvases and my paints and I have been feeling a slight itch to pick up a brush again. We will see… <img width="2437" height="2435" width_o="2437" height_o="2435" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ac164feb78823c9c0f5e612daf042ca5b712d842252cfb15395f3a1d67f22571/Eva-07_19_20157.jpg" data-mid="186202880" border="0" alt="Seed Pod Series, SOLD →
